Hotels in Makkah and Madinah are typically grouped by star category. Higher categories mean more space, better facilities and, usually, a location closer to the Haram — but the right choice depends on your pilgrims’ budget and expectations.
- Economy — clean, functional, often a short shuttle or walk from the Haram
- 3-star — comfortable mid-range, good for value-focused groups
- 4-star — more facilities and closer locations
- 5-star — premium towers, many within walking distance of the mosque
Distance is everything
In both cities, a hotel’s value is driven by how close it sits to Masjid al-Haram or Masjid an-Nabawi. A five-minute walk in the summer heat is very different from a twenty-minute one for elderly pilgrims, so "near the Haram" is often worth more than an extra star.
